Busy as a busy bee which is late for an important appointment

I've had a very busy week this week. Getting out of the house and going 4 places I've never been to before. Unfortunately none are on my list which officially makes this week a wasted one. Damn you list and your ways.

So anyway on Tuesday night I went to 'play' 'football' with the 'lads' (I believe I'm using the correct language here). Basically a few of the chaps here go and play 5 a side at a sports hall not far from Kits with a load of other non-Canadians (actually there are about 3 Canadians who play, but can someone be considered Canadian if they play soccer?). Its fairly unorganised and there's no league or anything. Despite not having played football in about 10 years or so, and that I was never particularly good when I did play, I thought I'd go along. 'It'll be fun' I thought. Hmmm.

Well it was fun. Sort of. The problem was everyone was far better than me and I was surprisingly unhealthy. In fact after a couple of games a bowed out and let a late comer take my place (and she was far, far better than me so I think my team mates appreciated the gesture, hell I should of been given man of the match). It frightened me to be honest. I'm supposed to be at my peak more or less physically and I can't cope with a couple of games of football. I decided that the playing wasn't for me but I would have to start going swimming again. Luckily UBC has a massive pool which is literally 3 minutes walk from where I work so from next week I'm going twice a week. I'll let you know how I do.

On Wednesday Andy and me went to a lecture. Oh yes, we are clever. It was by a guy who has written a book on the meeting between Churchill and Roosevelt at Christmas just after the Americans had entered the war. It was quite interesting but they concentrated mainly on Churchill which meant Andy and me knew a lot of what they were talking about. I want to do more things like this simply because I don't really watch any news or current affair shows on TV (they are awful here) so I'm not really using my brain much. My job certainly doesn't challenge me in that way either. So just as I want to get my body back into to shape I want to keep me nogging working as well.

Then on Thursday I went to the Vancouver International Film Centre. Just look at my increasingly big brain! I'm going to pretend when talking to girls that I saw some experimental French cinema but between you and me ( and I can trust you guys, right?) I saw two short horror films. The first, 'Homecoming', was directed by Joe Dante (yes, of Gremlins and, ah, Looney Tunes Back in Action fame) and was about American soldiers who died in Iraq coming back as zombies to vote out the Republicans. Yes, really. It wasn't particularly scary but it was enjoyable enough. The second, 'Cigarette Burn' was directed by John Carpenter who hasn't done a good film really since '91 ('Vampires' was ok I guess, mostly for James Woods). I'm pleased to report he's found his mojo again and its easily the best thing he's done in years. Also it was filmed in Vancouver so I spent a lot of the time thinking 'Ooooh, that's the cinema on Granville Street'.

I'm a member of the Vancouver International Film Centre as well now (I had to join to see the films) so I promise that next time I will see an experimental French film.

I'm going to yet another 21st Birthday party tonight. Why do people insist on reminding me that I'm no longer in my 'early' 20s now? Why do you mock me so? ARRGGHH. Oh, Happy Birthday Jade!
