A Tory victory

I'm sure all of you have been fascinated by the rollercoaster of thrills and spills that has been the Canadian General Election. What's that? You didn't know they were having one? Surely you read the dozens of in depth articles on the BBC website? Oh, there were only four. Ah. I suppose there was lots about it in the British papers, the Sun using a headline that references the whale in the Thames somehow. Nothing at all? Really?

Well to be honest even in Canada there seemed to be little passion for the election. Coming as it did in the middle of Winter, with a Christmas campaign and just 18 months after the last election. Still I'm glad to say that the Canadian electorate did its duty and went out and voted - turnout was even up. Now Canada has a new Prime Minister, Stephen Harper. Slightly, er, robotic to say the least, he's done his very best over the last few years to prove that he's not a foaming at the mouth right wing nut, even going as far as to reassure people during the campaign that if elected he won't be able to introduce a lot of what he wants to do as many Government institutions have a Liberal bias. Strange technique but that seems very much in vogue at the moment. Guess the left have been doing it for the last 20 odd years ('No really, we're not socialists any more) so its nice to see the right finally have to start doing as well.

Canada's new Prime Minister in the flesh. Course, you all recognise him now don't you?

It seems to me that people didn't want to kick the Liberals out really, just punish them for their corruption. They still don't trust the Tories. So they have a minority Conservative Govt and the likelihood of another chance in two years or so of an election to give the Liberals another go or let the Tories stay in if they prove themselves not to be mental.

In other words Canada got exactly what it wanted. And who says that Democracy doesn't work?
P.S. Don't worry, I'm going to stop talking politics now. Its back to posts about me falling over and pictures of Andy in hats from now on.
